Surgery Went Well....

Thursday's surgery went very well. I will be recovering for a few more days being advised to rest for seven days. I can still get around and do things, but I have to favor my left arm taking it real easy on it. I'm still going to try to drop cards over the weekend, but should return on Monday...I hope.

In the mean time....have a great weekend!

Feature Thursdays....

Today's feature is about a blogger friend of mine, Duni, who writes her Lovely Purses blog. She always has new pictures of bags she is working on and designing. Duni lives in Germany and sells her purses online on Dawanda. Duni has been enamored with vintage fabrics since 8 years of age when she acquired her first piece. As you can figure, this little piece led to quite an extensive collection of fabrics in which she features in her pieces. To combat creative road blocks, Duni dons her sketchpad and turns to the fashion media for inspiration. She also finds inspiration watching romantic comedies, keeping all her designs and ideas in sketchbooks in various places in her home.

Duni has watched her products evolve as fashion evolves and newly designed materials become available. Her bags have even found newer shapes in place of the more traditional shapes of purses. While working her wonders at the sewing machine, Duni prefers to hear silence to minimize distractions, save for the occasional bird singing by her window. On an alternate craft-medium, someday if time permits, she would really love to develop scrapbooking skills. Duni truly admires those with artistic scrapbooking skills using papers and embellishments. Perhaps someday she will design little pocketbook scrapbooks to sell along with her purses!

Duni prefers to keep her sales on the internet. According to a recent poll in Germany, the incident of internet sales are on the rise. Duni likes how simple and easy it is to conduct transactions online for both sellers and buyers. In reflecting on her most memorable moments in her business, Duni feels that working with difficult fabrics would fit the bill. I don't know about you, but I have had a few bad brushes with difficult fabrics in the past (whew!), so I totally respect artisans who can work with them easily. As far as obstacles in her business, Duni identifies time as being her biggest nemesis. She recognizes that one has to get a lot of exposure to grow their business and she is working on a website as well as promoting her site with her blog, business cards and on Dawanda itself. However, she is a freelance translator and tutor during the school terms (she speaks fluent English and German) and this prevents her to produce the amount of bags she would love to produce. Perhaps over time, Duni will be able to meet her goal. She is a very motivated, disciplined individual and I have no doubt she will excel!

Sleepmask Millifluer

I asked Duni if she had any advice for new business owners and this is what she had to say:
"Stay focused, be determined, be dedicated to your chosen craft, follow your passion!" Duni, I couldn't have said it any better myself!

Now, mosey on over to Duni's shop and drop a comment on what you think about her sweet bags!

Busy Week...

Therefore, I have to take a break on the Tips Tuesday. I have my final dental appointment today to have the temporary crowns replaced with the porcelain crowns. I can't wait! I had the Zoom whitening treatment a week ago (I don't recommend getting it done unless you love pain you can't control!), but it sure looks great. Took me up 8 shades whereas the ones you buy at the pharmacy can only take you up 3-4 shades. I will never regret getting mini-dental implants, however, please be sure to go to a reputable cosmetic dentist. I am fortunate enough to live in the same area as the man who perfected the mini-dental implant, Dr. Todd E. Shatkin. He took the standard dental implant and perfected it into the mini-dental implant.

Tomorrow I have to get my son to school at 5am for his Boston trip and Thursday I am having surgery, so I may have to lay low this week. I will definitely get the Thursday Feature posted, so please be sure not to miss it.

I hope everyone had a relaxing Memorial Day weekend!

Back to the Ole' Industrial Days...

Youtube is pretty cool. Come on, you know you do it! I admit, I was on last night finding some of the thrash metal I listened to as a teenager in the 80's...and I'm not talking Poser-Poison here, folks. I'm talking bands like L.A. Guns and Suicidal Tendencies
So, today I'm working on a new beading project and thought..."Wow...it has been a long time since I listened to Industrial in my goth days. Yes, I was one of those weird goth chicks...not the ones now, but the original ones from the late 80's - early 90's. We pioneered the goth scene back then - piercings, tattoos, black clothes. Goths are just weird now. They all think they are vampyres. Crazy. And we thought we were weird! Boy, am I glad I grew up and lost the piercings! So, I am visiting some old bands I used to listen to. If you remember this, enjoy it. If you don't, you probably won't like it anyway! Who knows, maybe you will!

Have a great Memorial Day weekend. Oh, and while you are at it, thank a Vet!

Thursday Feature

A sincere apology for not posting my interview yesterday. I may shoot for Wednesday of next week. Sometimes life just seems to creep up on you. In lieu of that, today I am bringing to you Joy from Joyuna.etsy.com. As you can see, Joy is a yarn artist, and quite talented at that!

Passioin for Purple Handspun Merina Striping Yarn 86 yds Sport wt

Joy has a clear love for fibers. Who doesn't? However, she does have a hidden love for handmade soaps and would love to venture down that road someday. The scent mixing process sounds very appealing to her, it's just the chemistry part she has to get through. Perhaps she could mix handmade soaps in hand knitted bags from fibers she has spun and dyed! Hmm...keep an eye on her shop as you never know what you might see!

With the many ways she works her fibers, Joy has a hard time getting in a creative rut. The variety of techniques she does, between spinning, dying, knitting, she finds that if she gets in a creative rut in one area, she can move onto another and focus on that for a while. As far as evolution of her craft, she has begun designing patterns in which she offers for sale in her shop. This might prove to be a good idea to keep several options available for you to pursue should the creative-brick wall show up on you!

As far as organizing her ideas, Joy finds a solution in two mediums: her computer and a sketchbook. Much of her ideas are stored on her computer in text files for easy access. She also keeps a notebook within reach to record ideas as seeing them down on paper helps her to think better. Sketches are very useful to Joy to play around with design ideas. When she is working on very complicated things, such as designing patterns, she doesn't allow for any distractions. However, Hulu.com is her favorite background noise when she is working on something a little easier, such as spinning, dying or knitting. Joy feels that this little bit of distraction takes the pressure of her mind when working on tedious things, also.

Joy has acquired a whole new appreciation for the handmade business. She is finding that running her business is a lot of work with many rewards. In fact, her most memorable accomplishment is starting her business in the first place! She is thrilled with the fact that she has a business and is very pleased that she is selling things that she has made by herself and hopes to devote much more time over the summer to create some more wow-factor for her shop. Joy currently sells online on Etsy, but will be venturing out into the craft-show circuit this summer and fall. She has gotten together with a couple handmade buddies who will be serving as support for each other in this direct to the public selling venture. Perhaps we can get her to post her schedule on her blog so week can keep an eye out for her!

The work, although she finds time-consuming, to Joy it is very rewarding as well as challenging. In running a business, you have a lot of hats to wear and a lot of skills to learn, but Joy is finding that every one of those hats fits and the ability to learn all the skills she needs to learn to make her business successful. She feels her most effective marketing technique is HER BLOG which gives her the ability to build relationships with her clients and fellow artisans. She shares with her public everything from what she is making, what is going on in her shop to what is going on in her daily life and what she's currently pursuing as a hobby. Be sure to stop by her blog and see the socks she has been knitting!

Joy has learned so much about from her business and offers this little gem of advice:
"...remember that [you're] getting paid to do what [you] love, and [you] should never forget to enjoy it. Running a shop is hard, being a new seller can be discouraging, and it's hard to get sales sometimes - but you should never forget why you started it in the first place, to do what you enjoy"

I don't know if you have ever tried spinning. I tried last summer with a drop spindle, so seeing the work that Joy puts out gives me a whole new appreciation for it. Believe me, it takes alot of patience to spin, at least until you get the hang of it. I was one of the many who gave up! Joy does offer us a beautiful and affordable solution to our fibers needs. Drop by her shop and shout a convo to her. I'm sure she would welcome the chat!

Tip Tuesday

As promised, here is a simple tip for beaders. I suppose this tip would work with hand sewers, however, depending on the weave of the fabric you are working on, this might not work, especially if the thread count is high. Sorry for the delay this morning. I had to attend a dentist appointment (don't worry, all is good!)

How many times have you gotten frustrated because your beading thread keeps slipping out of your beading needle eye, and let's face it. That needle eye is TINY and a pain to keep threading. Here is a simple solution:

Start with your beading thread and your beading needle. I prefer to use FireLine. I used to use Nymo, but find that FireLine has less stretch, doesn't unravel and is far easier to work with. I don't have to run it through beeswax to keep it from getting tangled. This comes in real handy when you are doing a peyote stitch in that you can work with long lengths. The longer the length, the less times you have to add to the thread in a project!
Go ahead and thread your needle. Now, here's the trick:
Leave a small tail (I usually leave about an inch which is not depicted in this picture). Now, take that tail and tie a simple overhand knot. Only one.
Pull the knot tight...
and WahLah! Your needle will not come unthreaded during your beadweaving (or stringing or whatever). No having to keep adjusting the tail or anything. I don't know how this technique would work with Nymo, but with FireLine, I can get many passes through the same seed bead without the knot getting stuck.

I know...simple tip. Some of you may have already figured this out. But to those who haven't, try this and see if your beading becomes a little more pleasurable without having to constantly adjust your tail, manage a long tail or rethread your needle.

When you are ready to tie off the thread, simply cut at the knot with embroidery scissors or nippers (taking care not to hit the needle or cut the eye). The knot will slip right off with a flick of your nail.

If you currently work with Nymo, please let me know if this technique works with it. If you don't use FireLine, I highly suggest trying it! You will never go back to Nymo again! Trust me on this one!

Happy Monday!

I am glad to report that my Monday is a very Happy one indeed! Getting orders out, making phone calls, connecting with contacts...what could be sweeter?

This Thursday will be the pilot launch of my Feature Thursdays. You will have a chance to hear from some great artisans in some insightful interviews. You will get a chance to get to know the artisans better as well as maybe learn a trick or two. Who would want to turn that down? You never know what you might learn! My interview questions were designed to offer insight and learning to the beginner artisan just starting out and seasoned artisan looking for fresh ideas. This is not your ordinary Blog Feature, Lucy!

In all fairness, I will be doing an interview on myself on Wednesday as a primer so you know what to expect from these interviews. It's not fair for other artisans to offer advice while I keep my little gems to myself. Some cultures say that karmic debt is a real thing. Don't take a penny unless you are willing to leave one. Well, I'm baring my pennies Wednesday, so don't miss it!

I am also working in another regular posting on Tuesdays...Tip Tuesdays. These tips can range from artistic tips to business tips. Be sure to check it out and not miss it. You may learn a thing or two (or not!), who knows, but don't miss the boat...you'll only get wet!

Incidentally, Jerri did a blog feature on me last week. Great job, Jerri...check it out here!

Okay, not stop reading and get back to work. May your Monday be as swell as mine, just take it easy on the coffee!

Make Your Business Grow...

...with all the free resources you can find!

I am offering a free resource...and interview on my blog! I am currently accepting artisans who wish to advertise their business on my blog. I usually pull my featured artists from a popular handmade selling venue, but I think I want to try enlisting artisans from my blog. Simply leave a comment with a way to contact you and I will send you several interview questions to be completed and sent back to me along with the URL address of your online shop(s) or website(s) so that I may pull some images of your art to post in the blog feature. You need not leave your email address if you don't feel comfortable...if you have an online shop, leave the url in the comments so I may convo or otherwise contact you via your shop (Etsy, Artfire, 1KM, etc). If you do not hear from me after several days of commenting, it is probably that you did not leave sufficient info to contact you, so be sure that the contact method you leave is dummy-proof!

Offer only good for handmade items, whether digital, computer graphics, painted, sewn, beaded, welded, knitted, whatever. I only ask that they be made by you, not purchased for resale.

Off you go....leave your comments. I will feature 1-2 artisans per week until the list is exhausted. Features will run on a first come - first serve basis (meaning first interview questions received completed determines your rank on the list of order).

Laying low.....

I am probably going to lay low this weekend. I had mini-dental implants and a tooth pulled this morning in my molars and I'm pretty sore. Each molar gets two screws put in my jaw bone. I had a total of 7 screws put in today, one drilled and screwed in immediately after getting a tooth pulled, so needless to say, I'm not quite myself. I will probably take the weekend off, however, I still plan on dropping cards. Plan...is the key word. I declined codeine as it only upsets my stomach, so I am working on Motrin...which is better than nothing. I highly recommend the procedure, just not so many done at once :] I assure you, they look better than the picture above...I just couldn't pass up a shark with human teeth!

In the event that I do not get a chance to get back online, I wish to broadcast a "Happy Mother's Day" to all my mommy-blogger-friends, be they human or animal babies. Be good to yourself, let your husband do all the cooking, and spend the day cuddling with your kids!

EntreCard News...

I don't quite know what I think about the whole EntreCard paid ads issue. I have tried it and found it to be a waste of money, so I will not partake as an ad seller anymore. I do not plan on cashing in my points (you get so little money for it anyway) and feel that using the credits for buying ads is much more financially beneficial to me.

So, therefore, at the present time, I will still accept paid ads ONLY from content-related blogs. The second requirement is that you are in the EC system and have a card for visitors to drop. This way, readers clicking through ads don't come to a stand still at my blog. I apologize for the many refusals I have had to make. I may stop accepting paid ads in the future in all fairness of EC credit ads.
