New Products in my Shops....

I have been working on some new brooches for my shops. They are constructed of two layers of wool felt with a form-fitting piece of acid-free mat board in between the layers to support the weight of the button. A hand tatted medallion has been appliqued to the felt so that it does not separate and wrinkle all up. Finally, the brooches are topped with a collectible button. The picture above features a large painted wood button and the picture below features a hand painted poppy on antique pearl. The artist is unknown. Last night, I listed a brooch in this line on 1000Markets.com featuring a leaf shaped button encrusted with rhinestones on black tatting and dark green wool felt. I have several made up and will be listing them on Etsy and 1000Markets over the next few days. Feedback is always appreciated!

Etsy, Artfire, 1000Markets....A Review.....

A little while ago, it was asked of me my opinion on the comparison between the three wonderful online selling venues for handmade things. I'm ready to give my opinion, but please keep in mind that this is simply an opinion and there is not scientific evidence backing this!

We'll start with a positive note: the pros of all three venues. Etsy has certainly been around the longest and therefore, has the most traffic. Definitely a plus! Shopping experiences are easy and search options are equally as easy. You also get a decent amount of tags for your items. Now, Artfire is in it's beginning stages, but believe it or not, I am getting a fair amount of traffic to my Artfire shop. What's better is that Artfire has integrated Rapid Cart so you can put it on your blog. Don't laugh, I got a sale last week in my Artfire shop using Rapid Cart on my blog! The fees are super reasonable ($7 a month, no more, no less), it is impossible to get lost in the shuffle because items come up at random, whereas on Etsy, they come up in order listed/relisted. Artfire also doesn't seem to favor certain sellers, every one is treated equal and you get unlimited tags. One thing to keep in mind about Arfire's $7/month deal: I purchased my spot several weeks ago when there were still 1600 out of 5000 slots open. There is now only 205 slots left open. If you do not lock into the $7/month, it will rise to $20/month. You can still have your free account, but you can only list 10 items on it. More items = more exposure. 1000Markets also just began and I get very little traffic to the site, but it is very upscale. The administrators actually "jury" your pieces. If you don't have what they are looking for, you don't get in. Kinda like Trunkt (they even have a section for 1000Markets members who are also Trunkt members!). I prefer the total look and feel of this site compared to the other two.

Now for the cons...I'm not trying to trash any venue, I am just giving my honest opinion. While Etsy does get alot of traffic, it is so very easy to get lost. There is so many sellers to compete with and items come up in order they were listed, so you have to keep yourself very visible which can be very expensive. At $.20 a pop, it tends to add up by the end of the month. In fact, my highest fees when I did my taxes were my Etsy fees! I also tend to notice that certain sellers are brought into the spotlight over and over. Favoritism? Who knows, but the bottom line is that I am getting consistent sales there, so I can't complain. Artfire, as I said before, is still in the beginning stages, so the con is not as much traffic as Etsy, but I am getting more hits and sales than at 1000Markets. Another "can't complain". However, even if I don't list anything and don't sell anything, I'm still charged $7/month. Cheaper than Etsy, but worth the gamble to see if they become more popular like Etsy. 1000Markets is still in beta mode, so there is barely any traffic at all and no sales. But when you consider the fact that I didn't pay anything to list there, I have nothing to lose. I only pay if I sell. You also get very few tags. This may be something they will change in the future, remember, this is only in beta mode right now. The other con is that 1000Markets doesn't do their money exchange through PayPal, you have to sign up for Amazon. I've never used them before, so this experience is new to me. If 1000Markets gains some momentum and I turn sales there like I do on Etsy, 1000Markets will certainly be my preferred online venue!

I do need to mention that I have accounts on DaWanda and ShopHandmade also. They have been there for about six months: barely any hits, no sales. Sure, it didn't cost anything to list on either site, but I took all my items out of the shops so I could stock Artfire and 1000Markets. Oh, a word of caution: If you sell one-of-a-kind items, don't list the same item in two shops. If it sells in both shops at the same time before you catch it, you will certainly be in a pickle. It's just bad business. Suck it up and make sure you have made enough items to stock all your shops. I'm not speaking from experience, but I certainly don't want to experience it, either!

I hope this has been helpful...now....get selling!

The Inevitable has come....

Why do we hate getting taxes done so bad? Well, for starters, a lot of us have to pay something back. We are terrified of screwing something up which might end up in more money we have to pay out. Not to mention the fact that the government always seems to be standing there with their hands out to collect money, but you don't really see the government handing out money to help people (well, most people, anyway).

So, I got my figures all prepared. Itemized expenses and total sales for 2008. As for expenses, I go easy. Supplies, mileage, fees (like Etsy, Paypal, Google Checkout), contributions, postage....the basic expenses. I was advised a long time ago not to try to expense internet, phone and home office by my accountant. Apparently, you are guaranteeing an audit when you do this and the meager $400 or so you can deduct isn't worth taking a chance on the audit and having the IRS find a screw-up that will end in more money paid out.

If you haven't filed your taxes yet, go easy on yourself. Claim only the basic expenses and save the trickier ones to the corporations that have people on their payroll to do this sort of thing. There is no reason that tax time should be more stressful than it has to be. This of it that you are paying $400 a year for peace of mind. Or you can pay $40,000 a year to ensure it gets done correctly!

How To Go "No Harm"....

So, I guess what I am trying to say is that when you purchase a piece of jewelry in which the button has been harmed, do not be fooled...that antique button has completely lost it's monetary worth. So, what is a jewelry designer to do?

Well, there are several things you can do.
1) First of all, learn about the buttons you are using. Some of them might really have no significant monetary value, while others might be worth more than you know. Click on the image above to take you to the National Button Society website. Here you will find general information on buttons as well as links to other websites that may give you more information. This is a good place to start in researching what your unharmed buttons are worth. If you feel so inclined to join the Society, membership is only $25 a year and that membership pays for 5 bulletins to be delivered to your home which include many articles about buttons.
2) Second, and this one may be difficult and will require a creative mind with lots of failures, but explore new options on how to incorporate the buttons into your jewelry without harming them. It has taken me well over 5 years to perfect this myself. It gets a little frustrating at times, but when you discover a new technique that you figured out all by yourself, the internal reward is priceless!

On the flip side of things, don't discard your broken or damaged buttons. I have a stockpile of buttons where the shank broke or that have other imperfections that greatly reduces the monetary value. This pile has been 10 years in the making! This is where I find my buttons for my button brooches, which are all epoxied together. Most of them are celluloid and glass buttons as shanks on celluloid and glass buttons are notorious for breaking or falling off.

I hope that this little series has helped you to understand why I take the No Harm approach so seriously. My hope is that others will adopt this attitude! Button On!!!!

Don't You Hurt That Button....

Before I start today's post, I want to start with a disclaimer: I am in no way trying to insult makers of button jewelry that harm their buttons, nor trying to sabotage their business. I am simply trying to get the point out about the detrimental recourse of harming buttons for the sake of jewelry! I'm just a bleeding heart for buttons and want to educate the masses of the depletion of value when buttons are damaged!

Antique buttons are like miniature works of art, time capsules of history, beautiful little gems to run your fingers through. As I mentioned yesterday, you wouldn't drill a hole through a Hummel, would you? The same for buttons. Here is an example. Several months ago, I saw a button necklace for sale on the internet. The button was worth about $35 all by itself, judging from the front of the button. The jewelry designer had drilled a hole in the top of the button, passed a bail through it, put it on a chain. This necklace was priced around $50, the description stated that the button was antique which made the piece that much more valuable. The sad thing is that the button is now worthless with the damage....worth only the scrap metal it is made from. At this point, the necklace is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It is no longer valuable just because it has an antique button on it as the button is now valued at $0, when it once was valued at least $35.

I see it all the time. Bracelets made by cutting the shanks off buttons and gluing the buttons to a bracelets. Those buttons were once worth about $5 a piece, now they are worth nothing. And the $40 price tag? The price does not reflect the value of the buttons, because they are not worth anything anymore. Pity, as there are usually at least 6 small picture buttons on each bracelet. Figure that out at $5 a piece. They are only worth something to the consumer who doesn't know better. Hairpins. Bookmarks. The tragedy goes on....

One important clientele that these people are missing? The Button Collectors. I know..."People actually collect those things?" Believe it or not, but button collectors come in all age ranges, from 8 to 80. I have been collecting collectible buttons for over 10 years. Remember what I said yesterday that these kinds of buttons are not usually found in old button boxes. These buttons are either found on ebay, button shows, individual websites that sell them and auctions. But I will tell you one thing: Button Collectors would be horrified to own a piece of button jewelry where the button was damaged to create the piece. Plain old shirt buttons are different, but collectible buttons, this is where the concern comes in.

Stay tuned tomorrow when I continue this series......and I hope I didn't ruffle too many feathers. No harm was intended....my only goal is education.

What's The Big Deal About No Harm Button Jewelry....

Well, I'm glad you asked. I would be horrified if I saw a piece of jewelry containing some of the buttons above in which the button was harmed....shank cut off, hole drilled in the button, button glued to something. The problem is that this happens all the time. A button is just like any other collectible...once it's damaged, it's not worth anything. It would be the same as drilling a hole in a Hummel, or gluing some depression glass to your wall. The piece is rendered worthless. The same thing with collectible buttons.

Now, I am not talking about those cheapo plastic shirt buttons in your button box. I'm talking about antique and collectible buttons, much like the ones picture above (which by the way, are in my personal collection). While some of these buttons might only be worth a dollar or two apiece, some of them are worth upwards of $35 to $50. I actually have a button in my collection that I paid $150 for at a button show, and I attend an auction where they auction 17th century buttons....for thousands of dollars a piece!!! I am not kidding!

Hey, don't laugh. Button Collecting is third to Coin Collecting in the World! I am going to continue this series over the next couple of days. My intent is to alert consumers to exactly what you are purchasing. Stay tuned for more....

Alterity Art Gets A Product Shift....

Alterity Art...my other shop on Etsy. Alterity Art was born for several reasons: 1) It is my official legal business name 2) it was originally meant to serve as an art shop 3) it quickly became the shop filled with stuff I made that didn't have anything to do with buttons (like my Alterity shop).

That being said, Alterity Art is going to undergo a shift in product. I want to clear out all the jewelry, all the marine animal plushies, all the CheekyKat Kittie Jewels. I want to specialize the product to be art. Altered art, Aceo's, Paitings, etc. No jewelry, unless it is altered jewelry. So...To help this happen, I am having a Clearance Sale on most items in my shop...60% off! I gotta clear them out, They gotta go. Not only that, but buy in quantity and save more. Here's the sale:

Purchase:
1 or more, get 60% off (reflected in current price)
2 or more, get 60% off AND free shipping
5 or more, get all the above, plus extra 15% off (70% OFF!)
(sale applies only to clearance items)

Designs By Reese

Simple Style, clean lines, that's the beauty of Designs By Reese. Samples of her work show the serendipity of her pieces. Each picture links to that particular item in her shop and Reese has agreed to answer a few questions!

What inspires you to create your fabulous pieces?
DesignsByReese: I am inspired by colors and shapes that I see in my everyday life, everything ranging from nature to curves and angles!

What do you do to overcome the creativity-stealing brick wall?
DesignsByReese: When I find myself at a creative block, I simply step away from my bench and do something else. My time away may last 20 minutes or a few weeks. Eventually I come back with a lot of new ideas and renewed energy.

what is your favorite part of the creative process?
DesignsByReese: My favorite part of the creative process is THE CREATIVE PROCESS. I love seeing a sketch that I dreamed up come to life in metal!

What do you listen to while you create?
DesignsByReese: I think I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't listen to anything when I work. My shop is usually quiet, except for normal household noises. Even if I have music playing, I rarely realize that it is on. I'm very focused!

Do you have any advice for fellow-Etsians?
DesignsByReese: Stick to what you love and the rest will usually fall into place. Don't let the mundane parts of business steal your creativity.

Be sure to drop by Reese's Shop, and tell her that Alterity sent ya!

Taking Flight...

The perfect cure for the creativity block....

Taking Flight: Inspiration & Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wings by Kelly Rae Roberts

I love books...I am actually building quite a library in my family room. I admit that most of my books are World War II books (I'm such a WWII addict!) with a little bit of fiction, a little bit of gardening, my Christian library is growing....

But one of my favorite books is crafting books. Books to teach me something new. Books to refine my current skills. So, as I was out this past weekend shopping for crafting books, I came across this fabulous book. The book does have a few crafts in it, several techniques I have never tried before, but the beauty of the book is the journey the author takes you through to help you push your creativity to a new level. There is room for journaling also, as the author challenges you to break out of your current creative bonds as well as jump start your creativity should you be facing the proverbial 'creative brick wall'.

I found this book at Joann Fabrics (my favorite store!). The list price was $22.99, but I used my 40% off any one regularly priced item coupon, so I paid $13.79 for it. I probably would have purchased it if I didn't have the coupon! You can order a signed copy direct from the author, Kelly Rae Roberts, and you can also find it new and used on Amazon from $9.62 to $15.63.

If you happen to see this book while you are out, be sure to pick it up and leaf through it. I can pretty much bet that before you know it, this book will be part of your creative library also!

Spring Cleaning...

Upstate New York. Blech! If we are not piled under tons of snow, we are being completely teased that spring is around the corner. Did you know that it snowed on May 25, 2004? May 25! Anyway, we have been teased with weather in the 40's accompanied by beautiful sunshine for the last several days. I know what you're thinking: "40's? Are you kidding? That's warm?" What you need to understand is that after spending months in the single digits, 40's is actually quite warm. Really. So, with the windows opened in the house trying to get rid of some winter air-funk, I realized that my studio is a total mess.

So I did what any other organizational-freak would do. I completely tore it down, rearranged it, went throught the house and the basement donned with various boxes picking up materials left around to place them in thier proper places in the studio.

Whew....after spending the day yesterday re-arranging, dusting and meticulous vaccumming, today is the day to make a place for everything and put everything in it's place. I am actually kinda glad to be locked in there today...Billie Holiday has been gracing the sound-waves and the screams and shouts of the family are but a distant purr. The windows are open, the fresh air is drowning out my ocean-scented Yankee candle...I can't wait until it is finished. What a difference what I have done makes. Oh, and I will post pictures when I am done.

Okay, folks, let's usher in spring and clean out our studios!

Wow...My Hand Keeps Cramping: Focal Hand Dystonia

So, I have been beading and creating for years. Literally. However, over the past 5-10 years, I have been noticing that my hand cramps to the point that my fingers lock up when doing certain things (stringing beads one by one on a string, crocheting, embroidery, hand sewing, writing, etc). I can understand cramping when you have been at it a long time, but we're talking after about 5 minutes, folks...10 minutes, tops.

I paid a visit to my doctor who sent me to a neurologist to explore the possibility of Carpal Tunnel. 'Great', I'm thinking, 'I hate surgery'. However, I failed every carpal tunnel test the neurologist put me under. After sitting for a few minutes with his arms crossed, his hand supporting his chin, he tried a simple exercise. He gave me a clipboard, paper and a pen and asked me to write. Sure enough, after several sentences, my hand started to cramp, my fingers started to lock and my handwriting began to change. I had always noticed this before, but just thought I was over-using my hand. He said that my hand was spasming while I was writing. Freaky.

His diagnosis? Focal Hand Dystonia (aka musicians cramp, aka writers cramp). Turns out, it is a neurological muscular disorder in which the basal ganglia in your brain sends signals to the affected area to involuntarily spasm. The spasm is what is causing the pain and the locking fingers. It is a very uncommon disorder afflicting persons of certain professions who use the same repetetive fine motor functions with thier hands. As a side note, dystonia can affect anything from your hands to your head to your whole body.

Well, I'm sitting there thinking, "Well, now what am I supposed to do? Beading and creating and jewelry is my business? I really don't want to close up shop and go back to the office!" Well, there are treatments. Unfortunately, there is not alot of research about this disorder and we really don't know alot about it. Drug therapy treatments are basically ineffective, the side effects of the drugs usually being worse than the benefit. Botox injections do help as they slightly paralyze the muscles that spasm without rendering your hand useless, but toxin injections? And you need them every three months. Physical therapy has shown to help in some cases. My plan of attack? I don't know yet. I have to go back to see a neurological muscular specialist to confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatments. All I know is I don't want to stop working on my business. I love doing this and am so complete in my life between business, family and God, that to give up my business would be very devastating to me. I don't know where things are going to go from here. All I can do is trust God that he will take care of me and that he knows exactly what he is doing. I'll tell you what, though. I am going to keep working my business, kicking and screaming all the way, until I absolutely cannot do it anymore. I think I may just design jewelry for shorter periods of the day...1/2 hour here, 1/2 hour there, etc, instead of 4-5 hours all at the same time.

I will keep you posted of the progression of this soon-to-be saga. For more information about Dystonia, visit the Distonia Foundation. If you think you or a loved one has dystonia, please get to your doctor!

Featured Etsy Shop: Katja Design

KatjaDesign is so multi-talented...you will find a little of everything in here store. My favorite item has to be her fingerless gloves and a couple pieces of jewelry that are simply amazing! I have interviewed Katja and wish to share her insight with you!

What inspires you to create your fabulous pieces? (Meaning, what inspires the theme of your pieces)
"I have a highly creative mind with a lot of fantasy. There are 3 things that make me create: A. Need. If I need a necklace for a type of outfits and in a colour that works with the current fashion and in a certain length, well that’s just about it. And what I want, others usually want too.
B. Bead shopping. When I come home with a stash of new material and beads, I need to get started right away, because as I pick strands I am already designing in my head.
C. Visual ideas from magazines, shops, movies etc. I collect those images somewhere in my brain and then at an opportune time, it is all put together into new designs.

What do you do to overcome the creativity-stealing brick wall?
If I don't spend time in my studio, I don't create; and that builds up the "brick wall". If I have orders to fill in and have no inspiration, I make a conscious effort to spend time with my beads, doing smaller things and then usually creativity arrives.

What do you find most rewarding in creating your pieces?
When other people love it enough to have to own it! Sales are the biggest reward and a confirmation that what I do is right.

Thank you, Katja, for your interview. Your pieces are great!
